Discovery Stone launches having chosen Donatoni for their workshops

Discovery Stone celebrates its official launch and reveals a stone fabrication workshop sporting a brand new Donatoni Jet625

Despite Discovery Stone being a new business, the team there are no strangers to manufacturing high specification products. The company has its roots in long-standing Dundee business Ravensby Glass which has been manufacturing high quality glass products for the public, residential, commercial, historic and medical sectors since 1985.

When Ravensby Glass were planning the consolidation of their business from two sites into one at their newest purpose-built location in Dundee, a contact came to look at a CNC machine they were selling. He commented that the site they were vacating and letting out would be the perfect location for a stone fabrication factory and an idea was born. The sale of the CNC was also put on hold. Following market research and due diligence on the sector, the directors decided to establish Discovery Stone and offer a curated collection of the finest stone surfaces for homes, hospitality and commercial businesses in the Aberdeen, Dundee and Fife regions.

Though they already had a CNC machine, Discovery Stone required a bridge saw and an efficient one at that. Spiralling energy costs had driven the decision to consolidate the Ravensby Glass business into one site, and energy efficiency, quality cutting results and speed of manufacture were front of mind for Discovery Stone when considering their machinery. After several calls and meetings, including a trip to The Stone Show in London in June 2023, Discovery Stone settled on a state of the art Donatoni Jet625.

The Donatoni Jet625 has improved their sandstone cutting time by half

Once the Jet625 was installed, Discovery Stone launched at the end of October to much local fanfare including a feature in The Courier newspaper on the 10th November (read the article here:

Since then, the Jet625 has been kept busy cutting stone, quartz and sintered materials for kitchen and bathroom worktops, splashbacks and surfaces as well as cutting Angus sandstone from the local quarry of Defind Stone for the local coastal walkway.

Following the training with the Stone Automation team, Discovery Stone Operations Manager Paul Kerr reported that the team had improved the sandstone cutting time by half.

As with all Donatoni clients in the UK and Ireland, this ongoing support continues beyond the point of sale. Both Donatoni and Stone Automation are dedicated to providing ongoing high quality customer service, and Discovery Stone benefits from an all-round service from Donatoni covering technical issues, maintenance and consultancy to help the business expand and enhance their skills.
